Lead Scoring in Salesforce: Method and Setup
Lead scoring is the practice of assigning points to each lead based on their profile and behaviors — so your sales team focuses time on the contacts most likely to convert, instead of working every lead equally.
The Two Dimensions of Lead Scoring
- Demographic score (fit score): Does this lead match your ideal customer profile? Industry, company size, job title, geography.
- Behavioral score (engagement score): Are they interested? Pages visited, emails opened, forms submitted, webinars attended.
Sample Scoring Framework
- +20 pts: Decision-maker title (CEO, CTO, VP of Sales)
- +15 pts: Company size 50–500 employees
- +10 pts: Visited your pricing page
- +10 pts: Downloaded a guide or white paper
- +5 pts: Opened a marketing email
- -10 pts: Identified as a competitor
- -15 pts: Student or job seeker
Implementation in Salesforce
- Create a numeric field Lead_Score__c on the Lead object
- Configure a Record-Triggered Flow that recalculates the score on every lead update
- Build a list view sorted by score descending for your reps
- Set a qualification threshold (e.g., score > 50 = MQL to prioritize)
- Connect Pardot for behavioral scoring based on marketing engagement data
Einstein Lead Scoring: The AI-Powered Version
Einstein Lead Scoring automatically analyzes your historical conversion data to identify the characteristics of leads that actually close — no manual rules required. Available in Sales Cloud Einstein, it improves continuously as your CRM accumulates more data.
Real-World Example
A B2B digital transformation consultancy receives 300 leads per month from their website and webinars. Without scoring, reps work leads in chronological order and burn time on unqualified contacts. After configuring a Lead_Score__c field with a Record-Triggered Flow (awarding points for title, industry, and behavior) and connecting Pardot for engagement scoring, reps only handle leads above 60 points. Lead volume worked drops 40% but conversion rate doubles — freeing up 5 hours of prospecting time per rep per week.
